Where to Get RBT Certification: What Happens at Each Step

Original educational contentPublished October 1, 2026

A White female learner compares an online RBT training provider, 40-hour certificate, competency assessment checklist, BACB Portal card, and Pearson VUE exam plan in one integrated editorial scene.
Finding RBT certification means locating each required step—not only buying a 40-hour course.

Where to Get RBT Certification: What Happens at Each Step

If you search for where to get RBT certification, you may be asking where to take the 40-hour training, where to complete the competency assessment, where to apply, or where to schedule the examination. Those are connected steps, but they do not all happen at the same website or with the same person.

In 2026, the clearest way to choose an RBT path is to separate the official certification process from independent training. The BACB makes the certification decision and provides the portal and current handbook. A training provider may offer the 40-hour course. A qualified assessor completes the initial competency assessment. Pearson VUE delivers the examination after the BACB authorizes you. This guide shows where each piece fits and how to evaluate an online provider without assuming that course completion equals certification.

Use the current RBT Handbook, BACB RBT resources, and RBT Test Content Outline for official requirements. ABA Study Online can support preparation, but it is not the BACB and does not issue RBT certification.

The quick answer: where each step happens

Think of RBT certification as a chain with different owners:

Step Where it happens What to verify
40-hour training Employer, university, or online training program It meets the current BACB 2026 requirements and gives a completion certificate.
Initial competency assessment With a qualified responsible assessor The current packet is used, the assessor is eligible, and the timing fits the application.
Certification application Your personal BACB Portal account Attestation, training certificate, assessment, identity, and other requested information are accurate.
Application determination BACB review Wait for approval and examination authorization before scheduling.
RBT examination Authorized Pearson VUE testing site Use the authorization details and schedule through Pearson VUE.
Active practice Under an RBT Supervisor or Requirements Coordinator After passing, your status is initially inactive until a qualified supervisor adds you as a supervisee.

The BACB states that it does not provide the 40-hour training, completion certificates, or training-program recommendations. That is why a search result for an online course is not the same thing as an official place to “get certified.” It may be a place to complete one eligibility step.

Where to take the 2026 40-hour training

The 2026 RBT Handbook says the required training may be offered by an employer, a university, or an online training program. That gives you flexibility, but it also makes provider checking important. The course should identify the current RBT 2026 40-Hour Training Requirements and Curriculum Outline, show how the modules meet it, and issue a certificate of completion after you finish.

The current handbook says the training must be completed in no fewer than five days and no more than 180 days, counting the start and end dates. A provider may advertise that learners can finish quickly, but the advertised pace does not override the current requirement. Confirm the dates and completion record before you start.

Ask whether the course is a standalone 40-hour training or part of a larger package. A package may also advertise assessment preparation, application help, exam review, or job support. Those extras can be useful, but they do not automatically mean that the provider supplies an eligible assessor, an attesting certificant, or a BACB application decision. Read the inclusions line by line.

Where to complete the competency assessment

After the 40-hour training, you need to demonstrate competency using the current RBT Initial Competency Assessment Packet. This is not simply another online quiz. The assessment is completed with a responsible assessor who meets the BACB’s qualifications and independence rules. The assessor may not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the applicant under the current handbook.

The assessment must be completed after training and no more than 90 days before you submit the RBT certification application. Before booking, ask who will assess you, which packet version will be used, how the tasks will be demonstrated, and how you will receive the completed documentation. If a course says “assessment included,” clarify whether it means preparation materials or an actual assessment by an eligible assessor.

Where to apply and schedule the exam

The certification application happens in your personal BACB Portal account. Create the account yourself with your legal name matching your government-issued identification. The current handbook lists the RBT attestation, 40-hour training certificate, and completed initial competency assessment among the documents uploaded with the application. The BACB reviews the application and sends an approval or other determination.

Do not schedule the examination simply because a course says you are ready. Wait for the BACB’s authorization, then schedule through Pearson VUE. The current RBT exam is delivered at authorized testing sites and uses the current RBT TCO, 3rd edition. The Handbook lists 75 scored questions and 10 unscored questions, four answer choices with one correct answer, and 90 minutes. Pearson VUE collects the RBT examination appointment fee separately from BACB application fees.

After passing, the certification status begins as inactive. Your qualified RBT Supervisor or RBT Requirements Coordinator must add you as a supervisee before you can practice as an active RBT. This is another reason that “complete one course and you are certified” is an incomplete description.

How to evaluate an online training provider

Use this checklist before paying for an online course:

  1. Current curriculum: Does the course name the 2026 RBT 40-hour requirements and show its module-to-requirement map?
  2. Completion record: Will you receive a certificate with your name, provider details, dates, and required training information?
  3. Timing: Can the platform document that you completed the course within the permitted date range?
  4. Learning quality: Are there clear explanations, knowledge checks, examples, and accessible playback rather than only a slide counter?
  5. Boundaries: Does the provider clearly state what it does not provide, such as BACB approval, an eligible assessor, or certification itself?
  6. Support: Can you contact a real support person if a video, certificate, or account record has a problem?
  7. Package details: If assessment, application help, or exam prep is advertised, are the responsible people, documents, and fees explained?
  8. Update policy: What happens if BACB requirements, forms, or the TCO change while your access is active?

Do not choose only by price, “pass rate,” or a countdown timer. Compare the current source, documentation, support, access period, and process boundaries. A low-cost course that gives a clear certificate and lets you learn accurately may be a better fit than a high-priced package that leaves you unsure who completes the assessment.

Mistakes that create avoidable delays

Using an old course. A page may still say “task list” or show 2025 materials. Ask whether it meets the current 2026 training requirements and curriculum outline.

Applying before the documents are ready. The application is active for a limited period. Gather the attestation, certificate, assessment, and identity information before opening it.

Assuming an employer is automatically the provider. An employer may offer training or connect you with an assessor, but verify who is responsible for each document and whether the relationship rules are satisfied.

Scheduling too early. Pearson VUE scheduling follows BACB authorization. A practice result or course completion badge is not the same as an approved determination.

Forgetting active status. Passing the exam does not mean you may immediately practice independently. Check the portal status and supervisor/Requirements Coordinator step.

Prepare between the official steps

While you are completing training or waiting for the next official step, use short practice sessions to reinforce data collection, behavior acquisition, behavior reduction, documentation, and ethics. Keep your practice notes separate from the official application documents, and use the current RBT TCO as the study boundary.

ABA Study Online can support that preparation through RBT practice questions, the ABA Study Online app, and related RBT exam resources. These are independent educational study tools. They do not provide the BACB application decision, the required competency assessment, or RBT certification.

FAQ and official sources

Where do I get the RBT 40-hour training?

You may take it through an employer, university, or online training program. Confirm that the course meets the current 2026 BACB requirements and that you receive the certificate needed for the application.

Can an online course certify me as an RBT?

No. An online course may satisfy the 40-hour training step, but certification also involves the initial competency assessment, BACB application review, examination authorization, passing the exam, and active supervision requirements.

Where do I take the RBT exam?

After the BACB authorizes you, schedule through Pearson VUE at an authorized testing site. Use the current RBT Handbook and Pearson VUE instructions for the appointment and fee details.

How do I know whether an RBT course is current?

Look for the 2026 RBT 40-hour training requirements and curriculum outline, clear start and end dates, a completion certificate, and a transparent statement that the provider is independent of the BACB unless an official relationship is specifically documented.
