BCBA CEUs: How Many You Need in 2026 and What Changes in 2027

Searching for CEUs for BCBA usually means one of two things: you are building a continuing-education plan for your current certification cycle, or you are trying to understand whether the 2027 changes affect the number of units you need. The short answer is simple, but the categories and dates matter.

Under the current BCBA Handbook, a BCBA needs 32 continuing education units in each two-year recertification cycle. That total includes 4 ethics CEUs and, when the BCBA supervised covered RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees during the cycle, 3 supervision CEUs. The published 2027 BCBA Requirements document keeps the total at 32 and the ethics minimum at 4, but lists 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. Your live Handbook, certification cycle, and applicable implementation date control your individual record.

The short answer: 32 CEUs in two years

The current requirement is a two-year total, not a yearly total that can be reset whenever you attend a course. Think of the 32 CEUs as one cycle budget:

  • 32 CEUs total in the applicable two-year recertification cycle.
  • 4 ethics CEUs within that total.
  • 3 supervision CEUs within that total when you supervised the ongoing practice of covered RBTs or BCaBAs, or trainees pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification, during the current Handbook cycle.
  • The remainder can come from qualifying behavior-analytic continuing education activities that fit the BACB rules and your professional-development needs.

The categories are not added on top of 32. For a supervising BCBA under the current rule, a simple planning picture is 4 ethics + 3 supervision + 25 other qualifying CEUs = 32. You may earn more than the minimum in a category, but extra units do not move into the next cycle.

How the two-year cycle works

Your cycle has a start date and an end date. CEUs earned before the cycle starts generally cannot be assigned to that cycle, and CEUs earned after it ends cannot repair a missed requirement. The current Handbook also says that missed CEUs cannot be made up after the recertification date during a reinstatement period.

That makes the date on a certificate important. Before you register for an event, write down your recertification date and ask whether the completion date will fall inside the correct cycle. After the event, save the certificate and enter the activity in your BACB portal account while the information is easy to verify. Keep the event title, provider, date, category, number of CEUs, and supporting document together.

The Handbook allows recertification only after the required CEUs have been entered and within the applicable filing window. Do not wait until the last week to discover that an activity was listed under the wrong category or that a certificate does not show the information you need.

What can count as BCBA CEUs

The current Handbook groups qualifying activities into Learning, Teaching, and Scholarship. Learning can include behavior-analytic events offered by an Authorized Continuing Education provider, qualifying didactic graduate coursework, and certain BACB certification activities. Teaching can include delivering a single instruction session for a Learning CE event or teaching an appropriate university course. Scholarship can include publishing a behavior-analysis article in a peer-reviewed journal or reviewing a journal submission under the stated documentation rules.

The activity type affects the proof you keep. An ACE event normally provides a certificate. A university course may require a syllabus and transcript. A publication requires the final article, while a journal review requires confirmation from the journal or editor. A personal note saying “I attended a webinar” is not the same as supporting documentation.

The Handbook uses a time convention for Learning and Teaching: 25 minutes of learning or instruction equals 0.5 CEU, so 50 minutes equals 1 CEU. Follow the CEU amount shown on the official documentation and do not silently convert an event into a different category because the math feels convenient.

For provider-based learning, use the BACB’s ACE Provider Verification Registry to verify the provider. ABA Study Online study articles, app practice, flashcards, mock exams, and teaching materials should not be described as BACB CEUs unless a separate, current ACE authorization has actually been obtained and the event meets the applicable requirements.

Ethics CEUs

Ethics CEUs are not created by placing the word “ethics” in a course title. The current Handbook says qualifying ethics continuing education relates to the BACB’s ethics requirements and/or cultural/contextual responsiveness, connects to behavior-analytic practice or applied research, and focuses most of the event on the qualifying content.

This matters when a broad clinical seminar briefly mentions an ethics code. A passing reference may be useful, but it does not automatically make the entire event an ethics CEU. Read the event description and certificate, check how the provider identifies the category, and keep the source material that explains the classification.

Ethics CEUs are part of the 32, not four extra units. You can plan them early in the cycle so that an event cancellation or a documentation problem does not leave the minimum until the final month. Remember that CE planning does not replace the obligation to understand and follow the Ethics Code in practice.

Supervision CEUs

Supervision CEUs apply based on your role during the cycle. Under the current June 2026 BCBA Handbook, a BCBA who supervised the ongoing practice of covered RBTs or BCaBAs on record, or trainees pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification, must obtain and enter 3 supervision CEUs to recertify. The content must be behavior-analytic and cover effective supervision practices described in the Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0) and the Handbook’s supervision guidance.

Do not confuse this maintenance category with the separate 8-hour supervision training. The 8-hour training is a qualification or preparation requirement for providing certain supervision; it is not a reason to erase the cycle’s documentation obligations. The BACB’s current source should tell you how a particular activity is classified and whether it satisfies your situation.

If you supervise only part of a cycle, keep a dated note of when the covered supervision began and ended. That record helps you ask a precise question if your role changes or if an employer’s supervision arrangement is different from the BACB record.

Current rules versus the 2027 change

The 2027 update is where many CEU summaries become misleading. It is not a new BCBA exam edition. The BCBA examination currently uses the Test Content Outline (6th ed.), effective January 1, 2025. The 2027 change described here is about certification eligibility and maintenance requirements.

Planning point Current 2026 Handbook Published 2027 requirement
Total per two-year cycle 32 CEUs 32 CEUs
Ethics minimum 4 CEUs 4 CEUs
Supervision minimum for covered supervisors 3 CEUs 4 CEUs
Ethics definition Substantive ethics and/or cultural/contextual responsiveness tied to behavior analysis Expanded and clarified definition; most of the event must focus on qualifying content

The BACB’s 2027 materials say significant BCBA eligibility and maintenance changes take effect January 1, 2027. The transition page also says complete applications received by December 31, 2026 are reviewed under the current requirements. That application deadline is not a universal instruction to alter your CEU cycle; it is a reminder to check which requirement set governs your individual situation.

A practical CEU tracking routine

A reliable system is less dramatic than a last-minute hunt for certificates. At the start of each cycle, create one private folder and a tracker with these columns: activity title, provider, date, CEU type, category, CEU amount, cycle, certificate or proof, and portal-entry date.

  1. Map the minimums. Mark 32 total, 4 ethics, and the applicable supervision minimum for the cycle.
  2. Plan across the calendar. Divide the remaining units across learning topics that support your practice instead of waiting for a single large event.
  3. Verify before enrolling. Check provider status, audience, event category, learning time, and the documentation supplied.
  4. Record immediately. Save the certificate, enter the activity in the BACB portal, and reconcile the tracker with the portal record.
  5. Audit twice. Review the tracker halfway through the cycle and again well before the recertification date.

Use an article or app as a study aid for behavior analysis, supervision, ethics, or professional development, but keep the CEU question separate: Does this specific activity meet the BACB’s current requirements, and can I document it? That question protects your record better than a marketing label such as “CEU-ready.”

Common CEU mistakes

Counting 32 CEUs in addition to ethics and supervision. The category minimums are inside the total.

Using the 2026 supervision number for every future cycle. The published 2027 requirement lists 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors.

Assuming every BCBA needs supervision CEUs. The current Handbook ties the requirement to supervising covered roles during the cycle.

Confusing the 8-hour supervision training with supervision CEUs. They solve different compliance questions and must be tracked separately.

Saving a certificate without checking the cycle. A valid event outside the cycle may not solve the current requirement.

Waiting until recertification week. Missing documentation cannot be repaired simply by attending more events after the deadline.
