BCBA Supervision CEUs: Current Rule, 2027 Change, and Provider Checklist

Supervision CEUs depend on the applicable rule, the supervision role, and the certification cycle—not just the word “supervision” in a course title.

BCBA Supervision CEUs: Current Rule, 2027 Change, and Provider Checklist

When a BCBA searches for supervision CEUs, the first question is usually “How many do I need?” The more important question comes first: did you supervise the type of trainee or certificant covered by the current rule during your recertification cycle? A BCBA who did not hold that supervision role should not automatically record supervision CEUs simply because a course has “supervision” in its title.

The current BCBA Handbook describes a 3-CEU supervision requirement for BCBAs who supervised the ongoing practice of RBTs or BCaBAs on record, or trainees pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification, at any point in the cycle. The 2027 BCBA Requirements introduce a 4-supervision-CEU requirement for supervisors as part of the January 1, 2027 maintenance changes. Use the requirement that matches your applicable rule and cycle, then verify the provider and documentation before paying or entering anything.

Quick answer: how many supervision CEUs?

For the current rule described in the BCBA Handbook, the answer is 3 supervision CEUs when the BCBA supervised the ongoing practice of RBTs or BCaBAs on record, or trainees pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification, at any point during the recertification cycle. The requirement is tied to the supervision role. It is not a universal extra category that every BCBA must complete in every cycle.

For the 2027 BCBA maintenance requirements, the published requirement is 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors within the 2-year cycle. The broader 2027 maintenance package also lists 32 total CEUs, including 4 ethics CEUs and 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. Because the change takes effect January 1, 2027, check the current transition guidance and handbook that apply to your certification and recertification timeline.

Do not use the number alone as your decision. Confirm three things:

  1. Which maintenance requirement applies to your cycle and date.
  2. Whether you actually had the covered supervision role during the cycle.
  3. Whether the event’s content and documentation qualify as supervision CEUs under the BACB rules.

The current supervision-CEU trigger

The current rule is easier to apply when you translate it into a role question. During this recertification cycle, did you supervise one of the groups named in the BCBA Handbook?

If you did this during the cycle What to investigate
Supervised ongoing practice of RBTs on record Review the current BCBA Handbook and the supervision-CEU documentation requirement.
Supervised ongoing practice of BCaBAs on record Review the current Handbook and confirm that the role and record match the rule.
Supervised trainees pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification Confirm that your fieldwork-supervision role falls within the current requirement.
Did not supervise the covered groups Do not assume that a supervision-labeled course is required; check the current Handbook for your situation.

The phrase “on record” matters. Keep the relationship and dates clear in your professional records, and make sure the role you describe is the role the BACB rule addresses. A course certificate cannot repair a mismatch between the event category and the requirement.

What changes in 2027?

January 1, 2027 is a meaningful BACB transition date. The BACB has published new BCBA requirements and transition guidance because eligibility and maintenance rules change. The 2027 document states that a 2-year maintenance cycle includes 32 CEUs, with 4 ethics CEUs and 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors.

This does not mean that every old record should be discarded or that every person should use the 2027 number immediately. The applicable requirement depends on the certification and recertification context. If your planning crosses the transition, make a dated comparison of the current and 2027 documents, ask your supervisor or program coordinator when appropriate, and preserve documentation that shows which rule you planned against.

A simple transition worksheet can include:

  • Your certification and recertification dates.
  • Whether you supervised RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees during the relevant cycle.
  • The handbook or requirements document you used and its publication/update date.
  • The number and category of CEUs you have already earned.
  • Any question you need to send to BACB before recording a disputed event.

Supervision CEUs, ethics CEUs, and 8-hour training

These labels are related but not interchangeable.

Supervision CEUs

Supervision CEUs are continuing education in behavior-analytic supervision. The BACB describes content connected to effective supervision, the Supervisor Training Curriculum Outline (2.0), and the nature of supervision. The event must meet the relevant category and documentation rules.

Ethics CEUs

An ethics CEU may be counted as ethics or supervision, but not both. If an event certificate or provider description suggests double-counting, pause and verify the current BACB rule. A single hour should not be placed in two required categories just because the presentation mentioned ethics and supervision in the same session.

The 8-hour supervision training

The BACB supervision-and-training page describes an 8-hour supervision training for supervisors who oversee BCBA or BCaBA fieldwork, or current BCaBA and RBT certificants who require ongoing supervision. It is a training/qualification requirement for relevant supervisory work. The BACB Handbook also states that CEUs acquired from the 8-hour supervision training may count as supervision CEUs only. That does not mean every supervision CEU is an 8-hour training, or that every course with a similar title satisfies the same requirement.

How to verify a provider and event

If you are comparing supervision-CEU courses, treat the purchase as a verification task rather than a title-matching task. A course page can be persuasive and still leave an important question unanswered.

  1. Check the provider. Use the BACB ACE Provider Verification Registry when the event is marketed as ACE continuing education. Do not rely only on a badge or a sentence on an independent sales page.
  2. Check the event category. Look for an explicit supervision category, not just “professional development,” “leadership,” or “clinical supervision” without behavior-analytic relevance.
  3. Check the objectives. The objectives should describe behavior-analytic supervision knowledge or skills and fit the current category definition.
  4. Check the documentation. Confirm that the completion record identifies the attendee, event, date, provider, category, and amount of credit in a way you can retain.
  5. Check overlap. If the same activity is also advertised as ethics CE, ask how the provider expects it to be counted. The BACB rule does not allow one CEU to count as both categories.
  6. Check the date. A course recorded under an older rule may need a different decision after the 2027 transition. Save the course description and certificate with your own record.

A useful test is whether you can explain the event without relying on its marketing title. What supervision skill or behavior-analytic decision did the event teach? Which BACB category did the provider assign? What evidence will you retain if you later review the record? If the answers are vague, pause before purchase and ask the provider for the event objectives and category documentation.

Also separate “the provider is legitimate” from “this specific event fits my requirement.” An organization may offer several event types, and an ACE Provider listing does not make every unrelated product a supervision CEU. Verify the event itself, not only the organization’s name.

How to keep a defensible CEU record

Use a simple private ledger. Record the event title, provider, date, category, number of CEUs, certificate location, and the rule or cycle you used when deciding to count it. Add a note if the event was part of the 8-hour supervision training or if the provider clarified a category question by email.

When your records are spread across email, a learning platform, and a paper certificate, the risk is not only losing a file. It is forgetting why you classified an event as supervision rather than ethics or general learning. A one-line rationale makes later review easier.

Common mistakes

Using 4 CEUs before checking the applicable rule. The 4-CEU figure belongs to the published 2027 maintenance requirements for supervisors. Match it to the correct transition and cycle.

Assuming every BCBA needs supervision CEUs. The current rule is connected to the covered supervision role during the cycle.

Confusing 8-hour supervision training with any 8 hours of CE. The specific training and qualification requirements matter.

Double-counting ethics and supervision. One CEU cannot satisfy both categories.

Trusting a course title without checking the provider. Verify ACE status and event documentation through the current BACB resources.

Assuming ABA Study Online practice activity is CE credit. Study articles, mock exams, and app review can support learning, but they are not represented here as BACB CEUs or ACE events.

FAQ

How many supervision CEUs does a BCBA need?

Under the current BCBA Handbook rule described here, a BCBA with the covered supervision role during the cycle must obtain and enter 3 supervision CEUs. The published 2027 BCBA Requirements state 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. Check the current Handbook and transition guidance for your cycle.

Do all BCBAs need supervision CEUs?

No. The current rule is tied to supervising ongoing practice or trainees in the roles named by the Handbook. A BCBA who did not have the covered role should not automatically count a supervision course without checking the applicable rule.

Can ethics CEUs also count as supervision CEUs?

No. The BACB rule says a CEU can be counted as ethics or supervision, but not both.

Does the 8-hour supervision training count toward supervision CEUs?

The current BCBA Handbook says CEUs from the 8-hour supervision training may count as supervision CEUs only. Read the current Handbook and supervision-training guidance for the qualification requirement that applies to your supervisory role.

Is ABA Study Online an ACE Provider?

This article does not make that claim. Verify ACE Provider status through the BACB’s current registry before treating an event as BACB continuing education. ABA Study Online’s study resources and app practice can support BCBA review and organization, but they are not presented here as CE credit.
