How Many CEUs Are Needed for BCBA Recertification?
If you are planning BCBA recertification, the headline number is 32 continuing education units (CEUs) in each two-year recertification cycle. The number alone is not the whole rule. You also need the required ethics category, the supervision category if it applies to your work, acceptable documentation, and a completed recertification application before your recertification date.
There is an additional reason to check the date on your source. The current BCBA Handbook and the BACB’s published 2027 requirements describe a transition in the supervision-CEU requirement. Use the rule that applies to your recertification cycle and the official BACB document for that cycle; do not combine numbers from an old blog post, a course advertisement, and a future transition sheet.
The quick answer
| Question | Answer to verify |
|---|---|
| Total CEUs | 32 CEUs per two-year BCBA recertification cycle |
| Ethics | 4 ethics CEUs in the current handbook and the published 2027 requirements |
| Supervision | Current handbook: 3 when the supervision condition applies; published 2027 requirements: 4 for supervisors |
| Application | Enter the CEUs with supporting documentation and submit recertification before the applicable date |
The total is not “32 hours of anything.” The BACB describes CE activities, category rules, documentation, and cycle timing. Some activities are learning, teaching, or scholarship, and the eligible conversion depends on the activity. A certificate from a provider is useful evidence, but it does not automatically make every course an ethics or supervision CEU.
What the current handbook says
The BACB BCBA Handbook updated in June 2026 says that a BCBA must obtain 32 CEUs within each two-year recertification cycle, including 4 ethics CEUs and 3 supervision CEUs when the BCBA supervised the ongoing practice of RBTs, BCaBAs, or trainees during the cycle. The supervision requirement is therefore conditional on the supervision activity described by the handbook; it is not a universal extra category for every BCBA.
The handbook also says that CEUs must be earned within the cycle to which they are applied. An excess amount cannot simply be moved into the next cycle, and missed CEUs cannot be made up after the recertification date during reinstatement. Those timing rules are why a CEU tracker is more useful than waiting until the final week to search for certificates.
Ethics CEUs have their own content boundary. The activity should focus substantially on BACB ethics requirements and/or cultural or contextual responsiveness, connect to behavior-analytic practice or applied research, and be linked to behavior-analytic literature or established practice. A course that mentions ethics for five minutes but mostly teaches an unrelated topic should not automatically be counted as an ethics CEU.
How the 32 CEUs are organized
Think of the requirement as a total with reserved categories, not as four unrelated shopping lists:
- General or professional development: behavior-analytic learning that expands skills beyond a basic introduction.
- Ethics: at least 4 CEUs that meet the ethics or cultural/contextual responsiveness definition.
- Supervision when applicable: the amount specified for your current cycle if you supervised the covered practitioners or trainees.
- Total: 32 CEUs across the cycle, with no double-counting of one activity into categories that it does not actually meet.
For example, if the current handbook’s 3 supervision CEUs apply to you, the remaining CEUs still need to bring the total to 32 after the required ethics and supervision amounts are counted. A provider’s label is not a substitute for reading the activity description and keeping the evidence. If you are unsure whether a course qualifies, preserve the syllabus, certificate, presenter information, and category explanation so you can review the entry against the BACB instructions.
Why 2027 needs a separate check
The BACB’s Recent & Upcoming Changes page lists January 1, 2027 as the effective date for revisions to BCBA eligibility and maintenance requirements. The published 2027 BCBA Requirements document keeps the 32-CEU total and 4 ethics CEUs but states 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. That is different from the 3-supervision-CEU language in the June 2026 handbook.
This does not mean every BCBA should immediately replace the number in an existing cycle. It means the cycle and applicable document matter. If your recertification period crosses the transition, read the BACB guidance for that situation and confirm which maintenance rule applies before you enter a category. Keep the source version and the date you checked it in your planning notes.
Documentation and portal entry
The handbook directs certificants to enter CEUs into the BACB portal as soon as supporting documentation is available. A practical record should include the activity title, provider or institution, date, number of CEUs, category, and the file or link that proves what the activity covered. Store the certificate with the syllabus or description when the category is important, especially for ethics and supervision.
Before recertifying, compare your tracker with the portal rather than relying on memory. Check that all activities fall inside the right cycle, the total reaches 32, the reserved category amounts are satisfied, and the documentation uses the same names and values that you enter. The recertification application becomes available within the BACB’s stated timing window once the required CEUs have been entered.
A practical planning method
- Write the cycle dates. Copy the start and end dates from your BACB account or current handbook record.
- Reserve the categories. Mark 4 ethics CEUs and, if applicable, the supervision amount required for that cycle.
- Schedule general learning. Choose behavior-analytic activities that expand your professional skills rather than relying on introductory material alone.
- Save evidence immediately. Download the certificate and supporting description, then record the category and amount.
- Audit before the deadline. Recheck the current handbook, the applicable transition guidance, your portal entries, and your recertification date.
For general BCBA learning, the ABA Study Online BCBA learning route can support concept review alongside the current BACB handbook. The free resources library is study material, not an ACE-provider authorization or a guarantee that a particular item satisfies your recertification category.
FAQ
Do all BCBAs need 32 CEUs?
The current handbook and published 2027 requirements both state 32 CEUs in each two-year cycle, but the category rules and the document that applies can change. Verify your cycle and current BACB instructions.
How many ethics CEUs are required?
The current handbook and published 2027 requirements state 4 ethics CEUs. The activity must meet the BACB’s ethics or cultural/contextual-responsiveness definition; a passing mention of ethics is not enough.
How many supervision CEUs does a BCBA need?
Under the June 2026 handbook, the requirement is 3 supervision CEUs when the stated supervision condition applies. The published 2027 BCBA Requirements document states 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. Check the rule for your recertification cycle before entering the category.
Can extra CEUs roll over?
The current handbook says CEUs exceeding the required amount cannot be applied to the next cycle, and missed CEUs cannot be made up after the recertification date during reinstatement.
