BCBA CEUs: Current Requirements, ACE Verification, and Tracking

When someone searches for BCBA CEUs, they may be asking three different questions: How many units do I need? Does this event count? And how do I document it before recertification? The current BCBA Handbook is the starting point for the rules that apply to your current cycle. A commercial course page or search result is not enough to establish eligibility.

As of the February 2026 handbook, a BCBA needs 32 CEUs in each two-year recertification cycle, including 4 ethics CEUs and 3 supervision CEUs for supervisors. A future 2027 requirements framework changes the supervision number to 4 for supervisors, so your planning notes must keep the current handbook and future transition separate. This guide explains how to verify an ACE Provider, preserve records, and use ABA Study Online for study support without calling ordinary website or app content BACB CEUs.

What BCBA CEUs mean in practice

Continuing education supports maintenance of an existing BCBA certification. It is not the same as initial certification, a university course, an RBT professional-development unit, or a general ABA article. The purpose described in the current handbook is to help certificants expand their behavior-analytic skills and stay current with developments in the profession.

That purpose creates two separate checks:

  1. Does this learning event meet the current CE category and provider rules?
  2. Can I document it inside the two-year recertification cycle that applies to me?

An event can sound relevant and still require verification. “ABA,” “ethics,” “supervision,” “certificate,” and “CEU” are not interchangeable labels. The event’s provider status, audience, content, category, date, and documentation all matter.

The current 2026 CEU categories

The current February 2026 BCBA Handbook identifies these maintenance numbers:

  • 32 CEUs within each two-year recertification cycle.
  • 4 ethics CEUs within that total.
  • 3 supervision CEUs for supervisors under the current handbook.

All CEUs must occur within the cycle to which they are applied. Extra units do not simply roll into the next cycle, and missed units cannot be made up after the recertification date. Enter the activity and keep supporting documentation in the BACB account according to the current instructions. Your personal calendar can make the deadline visible, but it does not change the rule.

Ethics CEUs need substantive content. Under the current BACB guidance, an event that briefly mentions the Ethics Code while focusing primarily on unrelated material should not be presented as an ethics CE event. The same caution applies to supervision: a course that happens to include one supervision example is not automatically a supervision CE event.

How ACE Provider verification works

The BACB’s Authorized Continuing Education Providers program is the official route for verifying ACE Provider status. ACE Providers are authorized to provide Learning CE to BCBA and BCaBA certificants. The BACB also distinguishes professional development for RBT certificants, so an RBT PD event should not be assumed to satisfy a BCBA Learning CE requirement.

Before registering for an event, check:

  1. Provider status: search the current ACE Provider Verification Registry or use the current BACB provider page.
  2. Event audience: confirm that the event is designed for the relevant certificant level. A basic introductory course for a general audience may not meet the Learning CE boundary.
  3. Content type: verify whether the event is general Learning CE, ethics, supervision, or another category named in the current documentation.
  4. Evidence: confirm what certificate or record the provider supplies, how the amount and category are shown, and who is responsible for keeping the event documentation.
  5. Date: check that the event falls inside your current recertification cycle.

The current ACE Provider Handbook also sets expectations for event content, instructors, expertise, records, and certificates. You do not need to memorize the provider handbook to attend a learning event, but you do need to know where to verify a claim. A provider’s statement that a course is “BACB approved” should lead you to the official registry and event documentation, not end the verification process.

Questions to ask before you register

A short pre-registration message can be more useful than a long marketing page. Ask the provider which ACE organization or individual is responsible for the event, what CE category is being offered, how many units are awarded, and what information appears on the completion record. For an ethics or supervision event, ask how most of the event addresses that category rather than assuming the title is enough.

Also ask whether the event is designed for BCBA or BCaBA certificants and whether the presenter’s expertise is documented under the current ACE requirements. If the answer is vague, save the event as a possible learning opportunity but do not enter it in your official CEU log until the evidence is clear. This protects both your study time and your recertification record.

How to track certificates and cycle dates

A simple CEU log can prevent a stressful end-of-cycle scramble. Create one row per event with these fields:

  • Event title and provider name.
  • ACE status checked and date checked.
  • Event date, CEU amount, and category.
  • Certificate or supporting-document location.
  • Recertification cycle to which you intend to apply it.
  • Any question that still needs confirmation.

Save the certificate using a consistent filename, such as “provider-event-date-category,” while keeping the original document unchanged. If the provider sends a correction, preserve the corrected version and note what changed. Do not count an event twice because it appears in two email threads or because one certificate includes several topic labels.

Review the log once a month. A short monthly check can show that your ethics or supervision category is lagging even when the total number looks healthy. It also gives you time to contact the provider or BACB before a recertification deadline, rather than discovering a missing document on the final day.

Keep one separate note for questions about your individual account. A planning spreadsheet can show what you believe you earned, but only the current BACB instructions and your submitted records determine how an activity is handled.

How to read the 2027 maintenance change

The BACB’s 2027 BCBA Requirements page describes a future maintenance framework that still requires 32 CEUs in a two-year cycle, but lists 4 ethics CEUs and 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. The Upcoming Changes page places the broader BCBA eligibility and maintenance revisions on the January 1, 2027 timeline.

Do not replace the current handbook in your account notes with a future summary. Instead, record three dates: your current recertification cycle, the date of the event, and the official document version you used. If a cycle or event crosses the transition, read the live BACB guidance that applies to your timing and ask the BACB when an individual case is unclear.

A practical event-audit example

Imagine Taylor sees a two-hour online event titled “Ethics and Practical ABA Tips.” The event is inexpensive, and the page promises a downloadable certificate. Taylor should not count it immediately. First, Taylor checks whether the provider appears in the current ACE Provider Verification Registry. Next, Taylor reads the event description: does most of the event address ethics or cultural/contextual responsiveness, or is ethics only mentioned in one introductory slide?

Taylor then asks whether the certificate identifies the event date, provider, amount, and category, and whether the event date falls in the current recertification cycle. If the provider cannot answer the category question, Taylor saves the page as “to verify” rather than entering the hours as ethics CEUs. The same process applies to supervision events.

This example does not decide whether a particular provider or event qualifies. It demonstrates the habit: provider status, event content, category, documentation, and cycle date are separate evidence checks. “Online,” “free,” and “certificate included” are not synonyms for “counts toward my BCBA CEU requirement.”

Study support versus CEU credit

ABA Study Online can help with concept review between verified CE events. The BCBA Theory Blocks, free BCBA practice questions, glossary, and app review loop can support recall and application. They are educational study resources; they do not automatically issue BACB CEUs, ACE certificates, or recertification credit.

If you need to strengthen a concept before or after a verified event, use the study layer that matches the gap: a Theory Block for explanation, a practice question for retrieval, an error note for correction, or the app for spaced review. Keep those learning records separate from your official CEU certificate log.

Common mistakes and FAQ

How many CEUs does a BCBA need? The current February 2026 BCBA Handbook states 32 CEUs in each two-year recertification cycle, including 4 ethics CEUs and 3 supervision CEUs for supervisors. Check the current framework tied to your cycle and application date.

Will every online BCBA course count? No. Online delivery does not automatically establish ACE Provider status, Learning CE eligibility, category fit, or sufficient documentation.

Can a free course count as a BCBA CEU? Price does not decide eligibility. Verify provider status, event content, category, date, and documentation through the current BACB/ACE sources.

Are ABA Study Online practice questions BCBA CEUs? No. They are study support and should not be entered as CEUs unless a separate, verified ACE event and documentation explicitly exists.

What changes in 2027? The published 2027 BCBA requirements retain the 32-CEU total and identify 4 ethics and 4 supervision CEUs for supervisors. Treat this as a future, date-sensitive framework and read the live BACB transition guidance.

A reliable BCBA CEU routine is simple: verify the provider, inspect the event, save the evidence, match the cycle, and keep current and future rules in separate notes. Use study resources to learn more, but let the BACB documents determine what counts.
