I Completed the RBT Competency Assessment—What’s Next?
If you are the BACB applicant who completed the competency assessment and are wondering what happens next, the short answer is: check the packet, submit the rest of the application documents, wait for the BACB’s determination, and then follow the examination instructions if your application is approved. The assessment is a required checkpoint in the RBT initial certification route. It is not, by itself, proof that you are already an RBT.
This page focuses on the current RBT initial-certification process. It does not describe RBT recertification, and it does not replace the current RBT Handbook or your BACB portal instructions. Dates, document versions, and application rules can change, so use the checklist as a quality-control tool rather than as a promise of approval.

Short answer: what competency assessment completion means
The Initial Competency Assessment shows that you demonstrated the required tasks under the current assessment packet. The BACB’s 2026 packet says all task items 1–19 must be completed, and three tasks in the Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction section must be demonstrated with a client. The responsible assessor must oversee the assessment and complete the required documentation.
After the assessment, you still need to make sure the application is complete, the correct attestation is included, and the documents are submitted through the BACB portal. The BACB must review the application before you receive approval to schedule the certification exam. Passing the assessment is therefore best understood as “one major requirement is documented,” not “the certification is finished.”
Check the completed assessment packet
Before uploading anything, compare the packet to the current BACB version. The 2026 Initial Competency Assessment Packet is labeled effective January 1, 2026. Do not accidentally submit an initial packet for a recertification application or use a form saved from a previous requirements period without checking the current handbook.
Use a slow document review. Check that:
- the applicant’s name and BACB identification information are consistent across documents;
- all applicable assessment tasks are completed and initialed;
- the assessment type is marked where the form asks for client or role-play demonstration;
- the required client demonstrations are identified correctly;
- the assessor’s printed name, certification number, dates, and signatures are complete;
- the responsible assessor meets the current qualification and supervision-training requirements;
- the relationship between the applicant, assessor, organization, and client meets the packet’s rules;
- the file includes every page and is legible after scanning or combining.
The current packet assigns responsibility to a BCaBA or BCBA who has completed the required 8-hour supervision training. It also describes organization or contractual relationship expectations and requires the responsible assessor to maintain assessment records. If a supervisor or training provider is unsure who can sign, pause and check the current packet rather than relying on a familiar job title.
Submit the remaining application documents
Once the packet is correct, locate the RBT Certification Application in your BACB portal and compare the application’s document list with your saved files. The current BACB application guidance emphasizes that documents must be correct and complete: required boxes, dates, signatures, and pages cannot be left for the reviewer to infer.
For an initial application, the competency assessment is only one part of the submission. You may also need the current training documentation, the RBT Certification Application Attestation, background or eligibility information, and the other items listed in the portal and RBT Handbook. The exact document set depends on the current requirements and your application record, so do not treat an online course’s upload list as the authority.
Timing deserves special attention. BACB application guidance currently says the Initial Competency Assessment must be completed within 90 days of submitting application payment. The RBT Certification Application Attestation also has a 90-day requirement. Read the dates from the current BACB instructions and write them next to the payment date, assessment date, and attestation date. If the dates do not fit, contact the BACB or follow the portal’s action-item instructions before submitting a replacement.
Wait for review, then schedule the exam
Application review comes before the exam
After you submit the application and documents, the BACB reviews the record. A completed assessment does not mean the application is automatically approved. The reviewer may find a missing signature, wrong document version, incomplete task, unclear date, or another action item. Read any portal message carefully and respond with the requested document rather than uploading several unrelated files.
The current BACB application-processing page explains that applications and documents resubmitted through action items are reviewed in the order received. The page also says that the BACB cannot decide whether a specific degree, training experience, or document satisfies requirements outside the formal application review. That is why your saved checklist should support the formal application, not replace it.
Exam scheduling follows an approved determination
Once you meet the eligibility requirements, submit the application, receive an approved determination, and follow the examination instructions, you schedule and pay for the BACB examination through Pearson VUE. The current BACB examination information lists the RBT examination as 85 multiple-choice questions with 90 minutes. Use the RBT Handbook for the complete examination policies, rules, accommodations process, and testing information.
Do not purchase an unofficial “guaranteed” exam package just because you finished the assessment. A practice test can help you study, but it does not replace the BACB application determination and it cannot guarantee a passing result.
A practical next-step checklist
- Save the correct packet. Confirm it is the Initial Competency Assessment Packet effective for your application period.
- Audit every task. Check the required task items, demonstration type, client demonstrations, initials, dates, and signatures.
- Confirm the assessor. Verify certification, supervision training, organization or contract relationship, and recordkeeping responsibility.
- Compare the portal list. Gather the current training record, attestation, identity/eligibility documents, and any other items the portal requests.
- Calculate the timing window. Place the application-payment date, assessment date, and attestation date on one calendar and check the current 90-day rule.
- Submit one complete record. Combine documents only as the portal instructs and make sure the final file is legible.
- Monitor action items. Check the BACB portal and email for requests, then respond with the exact corrected document.
- Prepare for the correct exam. After approval, use current RBT materials and schedule through the authorized testing process.
Common mistakes after the assessment
- Assuming assessment equals certification: application review and examination still remain.
- Using the recertification form: initial and recertification competency packets are not interchangeable.
- Leaving task lines blank: the current initial packet requires all applicable task items and specified demonstrations.
- Ignoring the assessor relationship: qualification includes more than a credential title; the packet includes training and organization/contract conditions.
- Missing the 90-day window: write the payment, assessment, and attestation dates together and verify the current instructions.
- Scheduling too early: wait for the approved application determination and use the authorized Pearson VUE process.
- Submitting blurry scans: a technically present document can still be unusable if the reviewer cannot read or verify it.
Competency assessment FAQ
Does passing the competency assessment mean I am an RBT?
No. It means one requirement has been completed and documented. You still need a complete application, the required attestation and other documents, BACB review and approval, and the certification examination steps.
How long after the competency assessment can I take the RBT exam?
There is no single answer based only on the assessment date. The application must be submitted and approved before you follow the examination scheduling instructions. A missing document or action item can change the timeline.
What happens if the BACB finds a problem with my packet?
Read the action item in the BACB portal, identify the exact missing or incorrect field, and resubmit the requested correction through the specified process. Keep a copy of the original and corrected documents for your records.
Can the same person who provided my training assess me?
The current BACB assessment guidance allows the responsible assessor to be the same person who delivered the RBT 40-hour training, provided the assessor and relationship requirements are met. Check the current packet before assuming the arrangement qualifies.
Can an RBT competency assessment be used for recertification?
Do not assume so. Initial and recertification assessments are separate documents with different purposes and task requirements. Use the packet labeled for the application you are submitting.
